There’s a seven-year-old kid near Los Angeles named Luke Nuttall, who was diagnosed with type-1 diabetes when he was two. So his mom has to test his blood sugar eight to ten times a day. And if it falls too low, he can die.
He also wears a device that checks it while he sleeps, and there’s an alarm that’s supposed to go off if it falls below a certain level. But his mom doesn’t want to take any chances, so they also have a DOG that’s trained to do the same thing. He’s a black lab named Jedi, and they’ve been training him since he was a puppy to SMELL when Luke’s blood sugar is too low.
Last week, Luke’s mom posted on Facebook that Jedi woke her up in the middle of the night. He was jumping on the bed and kept lying on top of her. So she checked the machine, which said Luke’s blood sugar was fine. Then she tried to go back to sleep, but Jedi wouldn’t let her. So she got up and tested Luke’s blood herself, and it turned out it was dangerously low.
The reading was 57, and anything lower than 70 is the danger zone. But luckily she was able to get it back up, and Luke’s okay.
