A Professor Says This One Word Is a Dead Giveaway Something Is A.I.

Have you started noticing the signs something on the internet was A.I.-generated? Here’s another log for the pile . . .

A college professor at Chapman University in Southern California went viral this week, after he revealed the one word that’s a dead giveaway something was written by A.I.

Any guesses?  The word is: “Moreover.”

He says it rarely appears in casual writing or conversation.  So when he sees “moreover” in a paper or other communication from a student, he immediately thinks A.I. was involved.

Several students jumped in the comments section to say that they might not use words like “moreover,” “furthermore,” or “thus” in everyday language, but they use those words all the time in formal papers.

The response was so big, he posted a follow-up video to say that he doesn’t dislike students using A.I., they just shouldn’t be lazy about it.  So it’s okay to use it as a tool, just don’t be fully reliant on it.

He also revealed a few additional words he’s seen a big uptick in since A.I. started taking over, including “delve,” “tapestry,” and sentence constructions like “not X, but Y.”

(Here’s the original video, and the follow-up.  They’re from 2024, but started going viral this week after Today.com did a feature on it.)

(Here’s a list of more words and phrases that might give away something is A.I.)
